Are you a sewist age 17 and under who has made your very first quilt or have been sewing for years? We invite you to enter your quilt or quilts in our Budding Artist - Youth Category and proudly display your creativity alongside quilters from across Alberta.
The Calgary Quilt Festival believes quilting is a creative art that belongs to every generation. We are excited to welcome young makers to participate, learn, and share their talents.
Need some inspiration for a project? Consider these ideas:
Make a simple nine-patch quilt using fabrics meaningful to you. Consider using fabric from old T-shirts or other used clothing to make a recycled-material quilt. You can use your quilt tag to explain why you chose these fabrics.
Make a quilted background and use appliqués to tell a story. For example, your quilt could be a map illustrating a recent road trip, hike, or other adventure. It could also display your memories of a party or a visit with someone special. You can provide more information on your quilt tag to tell your story.
Check out YouTube videos for quilting tips and techniques. Lots of quilters are learning to quilt using online resources!
Need help? Ask a friend or relative or teacher to give you a hand - as long as most of the “work” is done by the Budding Artist it qualifies for entry.
Check local thrift stores for project materials. Old sheets and used clothing can be cut into shapes to provide fabric for your quilt.
Did you know Calgary now has its own dedicated art and crafting thrift store? (m)ARTkit has all sorts of supplies including fabric and notions. Check it out! (website is https://www.martkitthrift.com/)
